I have a Wyse 9455 & would like to install (ideally) Windows 2000 Pro (rather than XP Pro) so I can run applications that don’t like XPe because of Window Installer issues. Idea is to use the device in a mobile situation instead of the laptop I’m currently using. Obviously 2000 Pro won’t even begin to fit on flash so I will need to use a hard drive (looking at solid state options). Had a look inside and can’t identify the existing flash drive but maybe its not necessary to tamper with that anyway. Motherboard appears to be a fairly standard ITX thing so there should be no insurmountable driver issues. There is one stick of RAM plus a spare slot & the existing RAM looks like common or garden variety stuff so I’m guessing I should be able to upgrade that easily. Default BIOS setup has the flash drive configured as secondary master and boot order LAN / CDROM / other device. It appears I can use an IDE drive as primary master, install from CD on primary slave, then tell BIOS to boot from primary master. Are there any gotchas or other reasons why this won’t work & can anyone provide suggestions on good solid state options ?? Compact Flash seems to be the most cost effective way of getting a SSD but I’ve heard that speed issues need to be addressed.

This will work perfectly. The original flash module is seated in one of the IDE slots directly.
Using a flash module isn’t recommended as flash drives have a limited number of read/write accesses until it will fail. This is one reason why XPe is using a so called Write Filter.
But if you go with a HD and a CD it will work just great. Did this myself some time ago.
