Hi Guys – just to confirm – I was using a fully licensed WDM installation (451 and 452) – and it would only allow me to image 2 terms also.

If I had the time I would have used netmon to see the inbound connections and try and work out if anything was going wrong.

Im guessing that maybe there is something else using up additional connections to the XP box – In saying that, I was RDP’d into the XP box running WDM at the time – I suppose that would have been one connection gone right there.

But I would have expected to see the usual TCPIP event log message telling me that I have exceeded the connection limit.

    So…I am somewhat perplexed too

Like I said – not an issue for me now as Im running WDM on a 2k3 server now.

    Cheers

thanks for the concurrence pauladam 🙂
It’s starting to look like I’ll probably need to move to Windows server as well since I’m about at wits end in trying to get it to work on XP. I figure if I go to server I will also try to push for WDM Enterprise so we can image more than 5 devices at a time.

I actually posed a new question to this forum as to what people’s experience were with the max number of clients they can re-image at one time with a single WDM server. Anyhow, will be interesting to see what type of numbers people have been able to achieve.

Just to add, I believe the WDM PXE imaging takes up 4 connections per device. So 2 devices is 8…and 3 would be 12 (just over the limit)

I believe this had something to do with tracking the progress of the update. If they close all connections, then you are forced to assume success on all updates, but by maintaining connection (even if idle) it allows to assume failure unless success is reported which is much better alternative.

Bottomline move to a Server OS, XP will be EOL via MS next Jan anyways.

    -k
