I want to add .net 3.5 and that alone would overrun the available onboard flash. I have some small S90’s that I can use on this project for free and so not take a hit to my budget for new Thin Clients with bigger flash. I am being cheap and trying to actually make a profit on this job.

This may be too late, but maybe it is still useful.

If it is the S90″L” (has “L” at end of product number), the flash is standard horizontal 44 pin module, available everywhere, including eBay. You should be able to find 1 and 2 GB modules readily, even larger with some looking. Same is true for RAM upgradeability, standard SODIMM.
This does not hold for the pre-“L” S90 models.

ETA: I get confused over the use and significance of the “L” suffix in product numbers on the various Wyse lines. I think what I said is correct for the S90, but quickest way to confirm is to open it up and look at the modules.

Is there allocation of flash space to video memory? Would WDM poll the hardware configuration from that point of view? It always seems to return the nominal rated values for flash and RAM. Backing down to B666, using USB pull/push, restored the onboard and WDM flash reporting to be consistent with the installed 128MB module.

@Spoolin01, that’s not correct. WDM is still tied to a device license. But to make it easier they give out the Workgroup edition without any restrictions. But again, from a license point of view, you have to have Wyse units. If you buy a Wyse client, you automatically purchase a WDM Workgroup license. If there is a newer WDM version then the one that was available when you bought the client, you are not allowed to update WDM or install the latest version.

Hi ConfGen – first, thanks for this site and your help, I have learned a lot as a noob and non-IT type.

I still don’t fully follow the Wyse licensing terms, it seems. In May I contacted Wyse and detailed that I had a handful of units – some that were more recent but also several (9450/9455/9150) that were clearly many years old, that I bought second hand, and asked about buying a WDM license. I got responses from 3 or 4 people, all eager to help – it’s impressive when a company shows that degree of interest in a small potential customer. They explained WDM Workgroup was free, and directed me to the online process for obtaining the licensing, which I’ve done several times now (it took awhile to figure out the 42 day XP password expiration issue, so I was re-imaging my WDM drive when WDM would lose connection to the ftp database).

Here is their licensing process page: http://www.wyse.com/bundle/bundlestep4.asp
It states that only units purchased after 15Oct2007 qualify for free licensing of WDM 4.8.5, yet none of their reps said anything about using it with my older units, nor offered to sell a license for them. Perhaps that was because I also had V90Ls made since the cutoff date, though no mention of the purchase date issue was made at all. The licensing terms – at least to the extent they’re described on that page – also don’t address the purchase of 2nd hand units.

Can’t help you technically, but Wyse makes WDM freely available – it’s no longer tied to device purchase.

CORRECTION: I contacted Wyse about the WDM license. It turns out it is now free, no 30 day restriction, for managing units purchased after October 15, 2007. The installed software has a link to the license validation process.

Have since found the answer to my newbie question – the ubiquitous IDE flash modules all work.

I see this thread stagnated several weeks ago, but regarding the suggestion to use the USB imaging approach for the 9450 – does it work for that unit? I didn’t think any of the 9000 series except the 9150 (different mobo/BIOS than the 9450/9455) would respond to USB boot devices?

I’m a hack at this, but I’ll tell you what worked for me, since no one knowledgeable has replied (they didn’t reply to me either… 🙁 ).

I installed WDM 4.8 from the Wyse website, using the installation instructions also found there. I just followed the pre-install preparations and the install and use information, and it’s worked fine for me for imaging an S90L and a couple of other Wyse models. I’d say it was easy to set up, for a PC/networking amateur. You have free use of it for 30 days.

As an alternative, on this site there’s a USB installer for thumb drives, and instructions (supposed to be an improvement over the Wyse version). I tried that on a couple of units but had no luck with it for the S90.

Have you tried the default Wyse admin logon?: ID = administrator; password = Administrator

One final thought about your WSI fail – have you checked the BIOS to make sure PXE boot is enabled (it should be listed prior to HDD as the boot source)? Hold down the delete key when powering on, until you hear the tone. Use “Fireport” (w/cap F) as the BIOS password. It’s a simple interface but the boot order is accessible, or you can select the option to restore defaults.

Also, there is the S90 and S90L. I believe the installation software (WSI, USB, or WDM) handles them differently, so make sure of how you’re doing it. The S90L has the “L” as the final character in the product ID found on the case label.

Between the Wyse knowledge base, this site, and occasional googling, I went from 100% newb to successful novice in just a few days, after buying a couple of these older Wyse units, just like yours. You have to put in the time though.

Alternatively, you could forget Wyse and their images and this rigamarole, and install a licensed copy of XP or another OS using other freeware means.
