    Hi everyone,

So now that we’ve successfully set up WDM enterprise on a remote SQL 2000 server I am experiencing a new issue…

When I open the client (snapin) on our workstation I get the error message “H Server is not running”. I uninstalled the application/snapin on the workstation confirming it was checked but still getting this error message.

I think this is why I am unable to scan subnets/ip ranges and auto detect our clients….

any thoughts? much appreciated in advance,
    ltd

    Hi,

HServer not running is mostly a problem of the IIS WWW service. Maybe there was a different WWW application installed on the system some time ago.
I’ve seen that issue on a server where Citrix webinterface was installed and deinstalled.

Try removing IIS completely and install it again after a reboot. Then reinstall WDM.
This helps in 99% of the times.

    Cheers

Thanks I’ve tried that now and i’m still gettin gthe error message..

Does the Hserver need to be running on the database server? Or just the workstation your installing the snap in on?

    thanks!

    Hi,

The Hserver only runs on the WDM server, not on the client with the snap in. When you install the console make sure you use a custom install and only tick the box to install the MMC snap-in.

What options did you install on the client?

    Cheers,

    heya, thanks for your response!

Actually, we ran the installer on our database server (sql 2000) and only selected The Database option…

Then on our main workstation we will be running WDM On we chose every other option and connected to the SQL 2000 server (worked fine)

but on the workstation when I open up the WDM program it says “H Server not running”

I believe this could be what is preventing me from being able to scan ip subnets? I don’t think our network allows for snmp…..

    thanks again…

Are there any entries in the event log that might be related to this?

Can you start the service manually? I would give that a shot and see if you get any errors. Drop to a command prompt and type:

    Net Start HServerInit

See if you get any error messages doing that.

And yes, this service not running will cause problems when trying to scan segments. You should see an error message about Hserver being disabled when you try to scan.

Have you tried to reinstall IIS?
Does the workstation has a static IP address?

heya thanks for the responses this is hugely appreciated…

I started the service and it starts for about 1-2 minutes and then just stops with nothing in the event viewer as far as i could tell…

I also tried re-installing IIS (twice) and then the WDM software too….

    same thing happened.

The computer does not have a static ip address.. its on DHCP.

    Hi,

the HServerInit is just an initialization service. So, that it is stopping after a short time is absolutely OK. BUT, the time of 1-2 minutes is indicating that it could not initialize everything correct. Normally the service should stop after 2-5 seconds. Everything more indicates a problem.
As WDM is a server application and you would (should) never give a server a DHCP address, you should give your Workstation a fixed address too.

I’ve found a couple of things to look for:

Check for URLScan or any other http filtering tools for “security” that my be blocking the http strings. – including proxy

Ensure the anonymous access is enabled

Check the status of your IUSR account (default for anonymous access)- you might need to reset the password

You might also need to promote the IUSR, or another user to alleviate permission issue that may be passed down by AD.

Ensure no other web server is running on same server

    type this into IE browser:
    http://localhost/hserver.dll?&V99

If you get back anything other than the 404 Page not found, (a server time stamp) then all is well

If that fails, replace the localhost portion with the actual server IP (i.e. http://192.168.1.1/hserver.dll?&V99)
Behavior should be same as above
If prompted for login, then its permission issue.

try these and let me know i had this problem and found it to be the anonymous account password being out of sync on IIS- if u want more on that e-mail me and ill guide you through setting it..

    1. Verify the inetpubwwwroothserver.dll has anonymous access enabled.

    2. Try resetting the IUSR account password in both Computer Manager and the IIS Web properties

    3. Increase the permissions of the IUSR account to avoid potential account restrictions.

    4. Applications that use IIS must not be running on the WDM box. For instance, Dameware.

    5. HP/Compaq management agents can use port 80 which will conflict with Hserver. Remove them.

    6. Test this link for a response: http://localhost/hserver.dll?&V99

Also try replacing localhost with the HServer IP.

Try prompting the user account specified for anonymous access to local admin temporarily and repeat above.

You should get something like the following

    2007|9|3|11|47|24|
    YEAR | MONTH | DAY | HOUR | MINUTE | SECOND

This value will continue to update with each F5 (refresh)
If it’s getting a value back then HServer is running. If prompted for logon then it’s a permissions issue.

    7. Tick/untick the allow anonymous connections box under IIS to the default website and reboot the server.

thanks again for all of the help with this, I have gone through all of the tips above…

Ive added both the IUSR & IWAM accounts to the “Administrators” group on the local computer.
I don’t believe that anything on our network is scaning or preventing the service from starting up as when I initially installed the software I didn’t see this issue. The issue has only come up since we moved over to SQL 2000 and running the database off of another server.
No other web servers are running on the computer.
    “type this into IE browser:
    http://localhost/hserver.dll?&V99

    – tried this and with IP and I got a standard “Page Cannot be displayed” (At the top of IE it says “HTTP 500 Internal server Error” where the page’s title normally would be.

    1. Verify the inetpubwwwroothserver.dll has anonymous access enabled.

    – confirmed

    2. Try resetting the IUSR account password in both Computer Manager and the IIS Web properties

    – confirmed

I just want to confirm that my set up is correct…..

We ran the WDM Installer on our SQL 2000 server and chose to only install the SQL Database.

Then on our “server” or main workstation that will be running WDM we ran the WDM Installer and selected to install all components except the SQL database as we pointed it at our remote SQL 2000 server (this worked correctly and DBA has confirmed that he can see data in the database)….

thanks again for the ongoing help…. Eager to get this working.. As I mentioned before when we had the database installed locally the first time we installed everything worked correctly…

    Thanks for the help,

I just tried resetting the password as you mentioned, and after rebooting the pc I still get the “HServer is not running” error message..

After the reboot, looking at the event viewer on the pc I can see the following entries regarding HServerInit

    Event ID: 12
Debug: Got IIS Web service info from metabase

    Event ID: 12
Debug: Successfully Got IIS Web service info from metabase

    Event ID: 9
    The Service was started

    Event ID: 16
Unable to intiialze the Rapport Management Software Web Server component. Either Rapport Web Server has not been installed or the web service is not configured properly. Please refer to the Rapport Help documentation for more information.

    Event ID: 13
    The service was stopped.

I went into services and started the HserverInit service… the status changes to “Started” for about 30 seconds and then the service stops again…

Do you know if there would be a mroe detailed log anywhere?

    Hi,

here is a complete wrap-up of issue I am aware of. Although some of them have already been suggested above, maybe it is worth going through them step by step again.
As long as you cannot connect to the website nothing else will work. This is fundamental.
    So, here is the list:

    1. Confirm whether HServer is running
    a. Run this link in web browser
    i. http://localhost/Hserver.dll?&V99
1.Expected Result is a Time Stamp
    a. 2007|12|31|11|59|37|
    b. YEAR|MONTH|DAY|HOUR|MINUTE|SECOND|
    2. If fails, retry with SERVERIP in place of localhost
    a. If prompted for Login info its User Permission issue

    2. Verify Anonymous Access is enabled for HTTP
    a. IIS Manager > Web Sites > Directory Security
    i. Enable Anonymous Access
    b. IIS Manager > Web Sites > Rapport HTTP Server >Directory Security
    i. Enable Anonymous Access

    3. Reset Anonymous User Password and update IIS
    a. IUSR_SERVERNAME is default account for anonymous access
    i. Confirm IUSR account isn’t set to disabled or locked out

4 Create new user account and assign as account for Anonymous access

    5. Check user permissions for WWW
    a. Promote Anonymous user to Local Admin to eliminate Permission Restrictions

    6. Verify no other HTTP servers/sites loaded on same machine
    a. IIS Manager > Web Sites

    7. Check for any ISAPI Filters loaded on Server
    a. IIS Manager > Web Sites > ISAPI Filters
    i. RapportFilter should be loaded
    1. If missing add new Filter Named ‘RapportFilter’
    a. C:inetpubwwwrootrapportfilter.dll
ii. No Other filters need to be loaded
    b. IIS Manager > Web Sites > Rapport HTTP Server > ISAPI Filters
    i. No Filters should be loaded under Rapport Site

    8. Check if proxy is in use for Internet connection
    a. Internet Settings > Connection

    9. Check if network filtering services are running
    a. URLScan
    b. Firewall

    10. Is server member of AD?
    a. Is AD overriding local IIS configuration?
    b. Will HServer start outside of AD?
