    Hey!

I’m looking for documentation concerning managing RDSLicenses (better known as TSCALS) for Dell Wyse thin clients. Searching through admin guides and ini ref guides, all I can find is the FixLicense (old ClearLicense) setting for wnos.ini.

    My environment:
    – XenApp 7.6 (Windows 2012 R2)
    – RDS License Server (Windows 2016 R2)
    – RDS License installed – “Windows Server 2016 – Installed RDS per Device CAL”
    – Dell Wyse 5010
    – ThinOS 8.4 / 8.5

    – Our thin clients wouldn’t pull 2016 TSCals from the RDS License Server.
    –  We saw that the RDS License Server gave out “Windows Server 2012 – Temporary Installed RDS per Device CAL”, and guessed that was the reason why our users didn’t manage to logon to citrix after roughly 90 days.
    – This indicated that we needed to install “Windows Server 2012 – Installed RDS per Device CAL” licenses also. Even if the 2016 licenses should be backwards compatible.

We have done so, and that solved the problem.

Question is why the thin clients didn’t manage to pull W2016 TScals from the license server in a W2012 XenApp 7.6 environment with a W2016 RDS License Server ??

    Another discovery we did was:
We, as administrators, didn’t have any problems connecting to our citrix desktop. Only our users. But, administrators also connect to Windows Server 2016 servers directly with RDP, so we figured we got a 2016 RDS license from them, that also worked with our Citrix desktop on W2016…..??

Is it possible to view what license is installed in a thin client with ThinOS?? I miss documentation around this. How to manage RDS Licenses with ThinOS ?

    Cheers! 🙂

RDS license are stored locally on the client. There is no way to check if it is there, how many are there, when they expire or any other detail.
All you can do it delete the license by INI parameter.

No idea why the license server 2016 was not working for you. Never heard that before from any customer.

Thanx for your quick reply! We still haven’t got this sorted out. Everything works, though, but we’re curious why we didn’t get the 2016-RDS licenses to work.

(Thanks for running this site, Thomas! I’ve been using it for many years, working with tc’s from Wyse/Dell the past 10 years.)

You can disable license upgrades via group policy, perhaps this is your problem? We don’t use Citrix at our site, but our 2016 licensing server does provide CAL’s for 2008, 2012, and 2016 Terminal Servers.
