    Hello

We have a history with the older C10LE devices, that are now EOL, so I am familiar with how things were managed a few years ago but am a bit out of touch with the current gear and processes.  So, please be patient with me…  We bought some new AIO 5040’s, and I have hard a difficult time registering them to get my 90-days free access to the firmware.  I had to call Dell support to get it, and they are sending me the firmware via a file sharing site.  But during the call the support tech told me something really strange and alarming (that is, I find this alarming).

She said that they recommend we upgrade firmware serially; so if I was on a hypothetical 8.3_012, then I would need to upgrade to each version they released between 8.3_012 to 8.4_110.  She said each firmware has fixes that may not apply if we jumped straight to 8.4_110.

I find this really hard to believe and am looking for the communities opinion on this recommendation.  I just think if we had a big deployment and wanted to upgrade then how on earth can I manage upgrading them all serially like that?  We are a pretty small customer with about 70 units (mostly the defunct c10le’s), and even being that small I cannot imagine doing this reliably and accurately.  If this was the truth then I would expect someway to actually configure the wnos.ini file with a list of firmware in the order I want it applied then, but I have never seen that before either.

    Thank you,

    Bruce

as a follow up question – should I expect to see a ‘boot’ file in addition to the ‘wnos’ file, like I had with the thinos 7.x versions on my c10le’s?

when I check the ftp logs I can see my new 5040’s asking for a /wnos/ZD10_bios.bin as well as a /wnos/ZD10_wnos file; since we have autoload=1 in the wnos.ini

Thank goodness!  I agree – smelled like BS to me too.  I just sent you an email as you requested.

So with the bios file can I assume there is no matching version for each ThinOS upgrade then, and I should not worry about that?

Thank you again.  I don’t know really how far we ever would have gotten with Wyse terminals over the years without you and this site!

BIOS and firmware are not related to each other.
If there is a newer one and you put it in the wnos folder, the clients will upgrade the BIOS like they do with the firmware.
And thanks for the compliment. Happy to help.

Bruce, I have published a new article which explains how to successfully upgrade ThinOS devices.
Hope that helps and explains everything.
