Just got a few 3040’s in today. All the new 3040’s are on 9.1.2101. Attempting to image w Merlin, using known good Kingston datatraveler 16GB USB sticks, with the latest 8.6 Merlin image from the Dell 3040 support site – 8.6_710. (I know this is not the latest 8.6 image, but it is the latest Merlin image available). The usb stick is recognized and the Merlin imaging push process can be started, but then it immediately fails with:

! Error while validating security key (error code: 233)

    -eeprom validation
-mismatch between Security key of the device and security key present in the XML file of image package
-check if you are trying to deploy correct image for the intended platfrom. Re-register the correct image package”

Googling reveals various reason this could be, though this exact error message has been around a while for various flavors of thin client trouble.

Per sticker on bottom of each new 3040, they are ‘optimized’ for PCoIP – but we are not using Teradici, only RDP.

I can’t remember if I had read something online about having to set the date back manually, at some point, somewhere? past a certain calendar date? on new 3040’s from the factory? Maybe I imagined that.

I thought the only adjustments required were per

    Downgrading the ThinOS 9 firmware

    – turn off secure boot
    – clear TPM (though I see no TPM entry in the bios).

I have Merlin-imaged our older 3040’s (I think we got them in 2019) with the new usb sticks to either 8.6_710, or, to 9.1.3129, but I guess I hadn’t tried flashing backwards to an earlier firmware version before today, so the age of the 3040 hw might be moot.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks very much!

    EC,

I received a bunch of 9.0 clients in Dec/20 that I had to roll back to 8.6. Dont care much for 9.0 being a vmware environment. If I recall, I had to take an image of a 8.6 client and use imaging tool to throw it on the new ones, overwriting everything

Wons – the solution is – wrong merlin image. The error of course doesn’t tell you this. I had previously been told that you can use the same image for both 3040’s that are PCoIP capable and ones that are not *even if you never use PCoIP*. So you must flash with image that is specifically for 3040’s that come from the factory able to use PCoIP (as evidenced by label on bottom), or not, depending on which 3040 model you purchased.

Curious whether this behavior will persist with whatever supercedes the 3040 as I hear they are EOL in January 2022.

Thanks for your suggestion. : )

    Ah, I see.

Good to know. Also curious about EOL of these devices. Was searching to see if ThinOS 9.1 supported Horizon 5.4 for DUO MFA
