    Crazy I know.

    Environment = WMS 3.1, Wyse 5070 w/ PCoIP units, ThinOS 8.6_606.

    We have gotten reports recently, although the claim is this has been going on a while, that the terminals were shutting off randomly. These were strictly on our wireless units which are attached to mobile carts. Initially we just thought the carts weren’t being charged, but, then we did a few tests and came across something else.

    One one cart, 3 times in a row, we saw the terminal go into a shutdown when the unit roamed to a new AP. It was to the second. As soon as the roam occurred, we got the popup below. What’s odd is we do not have ANY policy regarding power down anywhere in our WMS config.

    We tried running the same test in a different building with 5010s. Those roamed just fine. They’re in the exact same policy as the 5070s from above.

    So isolated: 5070 vs. 5010, and wireless network location.

    Could anything from a wireless network setup possibly send a GRACEFUL shutdown command to a terminal just from an AP roam? Seems impossible to me.

    Thanks in advance if anyone has seen these odd issue.

    Was able to reproduce the issue with Dell support on a Zoom yesterday, we got several recordings of it for them to see. We also sent along logs with them, both on 8.6_606 and 8.6_710.

    I’m leaning towards some kind of cart malfunctioning as the root cause, more than I am roaming. At least twice I saw the issue happen where a roam didn’t, along with seeing several roams prior go just fine as we walked through a floor. I’m wondering if something with the power supplied FROM the cart, is having a glitch and the terminal is INTERPRETING it as a command/reason to power down. Unfortunately I don’t have a smoking gun yet, but, I’m leaning in that direction. Just doesn’t make sense that a roam, randomly, is telling the terminal do a graceful shutdown.

    This cart being used is the ENV0-1DC000-A00 from Envoy.

    Verified that tapping the power button on the terminal causes the exact same popup/behavior on the unit. At this point we’re leaning heavily on the idea that it’s a power consumption/error between the cart and terminal, where the 5070 is interpreting it as a Power off. Graceful power off.
