It seems that “optional” Wifi/BT for 3040 is actually reserved for factory equipped 3040 (or if you get original Dell branded AW-CM89MA module)…
Among other 3040 data sheet states: Azurewave AW-CM389MA w/Marvell 8897chip, M.2 2230 (SDIOinterface) (Optional).
I got 3040 some time ago and I would like to perform some BT testing. As my device did not came equipped with WiFi/BT, I ordered a Azurewave AW-CM389MA module via Arrow (not easy to get, probably not designed for EU market). Installation along with DeLock Dual Band WLAN Antenna (internal) went without any issues. However BIOS and Boot Diagnostics will display that WiFi/BT module is not installed.
So it seems the upgrade is vendor-locked (or there is a small chance that I got faulty M.2 module).
Interestingly 3040 requires no tools to open, you simply remove the bottom cover and M.2 2230 slot is exposed.
Does anybody have any official information regarding this?
May 12, 2020 at 3:55 pm #52266As you already wrote, WLAN/BT is a factory option only.
There is no supported way to get this running afterwards. And I do not know of any unsupported one either.CG
May 12, 2020 at 4:20 pm #52267So it seems; so when buying:
CFFK7: 3040 – Intel Atom x5-Z8350, 2GB RAM, 8GB Flash, ThinOS (Without WiFi)
CKW1J: 3040 – Intel Atom x5-Z8350, 2GB RAM, 8GB Flash, ThinOS (With WiFi)I guess Dell has modified FW ID strings on AW-CM389MA module.
As said, if anybody else is thinking about such an upgrade, this is first-hand information – did NOT work for me.
Appreciate fast answer!
Kind regards,
Blaz
May 12, 2020 at 5:15 pm #52268One thing is odd – why even bother with putting Azurewave AW-CM389MA w/Marvell 8897chip, M.2 2230 (SDIOinterface) (Optional) in the datasheet than? If only option is to order specific model? Then it would make much more sense to point that out…
Just technical correctness here. I can understand vendors want to make sure there are no potential issues with untested peripheral devices firmware versions, but then, why bother with tech info in the first place. I doubt most people actually keeps track if certain WiFi chipset used in the client has connectivity issues with WiFi infrastructure used in company. And in that case, those would always ask for tech details.
Just my 22¢
October 10, 2021 at 6:25 am #106343It was recently pointed out to me that if you search for the AW-CM389MA datasheet you will find two versions. One for the AW-CM389MA with an SDIO interface and one for the AW-CM389MA with a PCIe/USB interface. Both give the model name as AW-CM389MA. Is it possible that the wrong version was sourced? (Mind you the current entry on the Arrow website does give the interface as SDIO).
